Training Your Best Friend

The Leash

Hopefully when you bring your dog home, the breeder will have done some preliminaries. However if they didn't, as was the case with Misha, you will want to buy a collar and leash and allow your dog to get accustomed to it by just placing it on him and letting him walk around the house with it.

Do this for a few minutes at a time and only when you are with the dog. I can't stress that enough. The leash can become caught on something in your home and the dog, in a frightened attempt to escape can strangle itself.

Hold the leash, walk the dog through your home, back and forth, a few minutes at a time. Say "No" firmly if the dog attempts to bite the leash and praise it when it stops and accepts the leash.

Some dogs become frenzied when they are collared and leashed, and others just accept it easily so be prepared for the possibility of a little back talk from the dog. Don't get nervous, don't let the dog sense your doubts. You are the Alpha Wolf. Just remember that always.
