The
Sit
Sit is probably one of the commands your dog will learn
easily. The dog, standing facing you, will be told to sit. Then all you
need to do is place your hand in front of his tail with a bit of pressure
and he will sit.
Praise him. Say, pookie, wookie, sweetums (or whatever you
named him) good dog. Say it like you just inhaled Helium and your dog
will actually dance for you. (Its a good idea not to get too enthusiastic
or your dog will get too excited and forget that it is in school. Also
he might pee on the floor)
Well anyway, spend 5 minutes the first few times, you can
graduate to 10 minutes after a few sessions, with 15 minutes being probably
the longest session both you and your dog will want....just repeat the
same thing.
Tell the dog to sit, and praise him after you have pressed
him to a sitting position. After a while, place a bit of space and time
between the actual command and pressing on the dogs rump. Sooner or later,
Pookie will sit by him/herself.
Whewwwww, you are going to be dancing now. This is a wonderful
time. You have gained confidence as a teacher and your dog has gained
confidence as a student. He has also learned that he is supposed to do
something here, and that when you speak it actually means something. This
will help in future lessons too.
