The
Stay
The stay command should be taught with the leash on. There
are several different lengths of leash you can purchase and you will want
one of the longer training leashes for this command. Place your dog in
position to face you. Say "stay" and walk away so that the dog can still
see you. The puppy will probably try to follow. Watch closely and if he
does tell him no firmly and place him back in the spot that he was sitting
in. Then you can praise him when he is sitting in this spot. Repeat this
exercise remembering to always place the puppy back in the original spot.
Some trainers advise the use of hand signals as well as the verbal command.
This hand signal requires you to hold your arm outstretched with your
hand up at a 90 degree angle, palm facing the dog.
